Preliminary Task - 6th Form Magazine

Target Audience Profile

My magazine is aimed at a target audience of male and female students aged between 16 and 19. They are all obviously 6th form students studying subjects such as: English, Maths, Science, Media Studies, and Psychology. Some of them may have part time jobs so they will benefit from and enjoy articles in the magazine about jobs, how to get one, which shops and businesses are recruiting young people and how to create a good CV.

The readers of my magazine will all be intelligent, happy and bubbly students. They will enjoy reading about the latest gossip in the common room, how to do their best in their exams, how to revise and what the most up-to-date fashion craze is. They will have a good group of friends and enjoy doing things such as socialising, using social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, shopping and sport. Education is important to the target audience; they appreciate their study and learning and see success at A Level as a key stepping-stone to achieving their future goals. The Magazine will therefore offer tips and guidance related to exams, revision and academia.  Their extra curricular interests will be reflected through a page on after school clubs such as extra academic revision and catch up classes, the football team, netball team and other sporting activities that are going on after and during school hours. The students that read the magazine will also enjoy going to the cinema to watch horror and comedy films. Many of them watch TV programmes such as soaps and documentaries. They all mostly listen to radio stations such as Capital FM and KISS FM which plays chart music.

All of the readers of the magazine will be quite organized and ‘switched on’. They have a life plan and want to be educated further and do well in their academic life. Many of them will want to go to university so my magazine will include pages about UCAS information and university tables. The readers will all have good values and enjoy learning.

 Mission Statement

My magazine will be called ‘SBTB’ (Saved By The Bell) and the target audience will be male and female students at 6th form aged between 16 and 19. The magazine will be cool and trendy, presented in a colourful, eye catching and funky package. Fully aware of the needs of its readers, the magazine’s sole aim will be to provide its audience with information, guidance and advice, whilst keeping them happy and entertained. ‘SBTB’ will believe in teaching its target audience about educational things as well as giving the students ‘life lessons’ that will enable them to cope with school and to flourish in their studies. The magazine will be distributed in the school common room monthly; the date of issue will be the same each month, so students will know when they can obtain the latest edition. Readers will be able to enjoy and benefit a range of features within the magazine each month. First and foremost, there will be material exclusively about school. The readership will be able to find out about popular universities, how to balance school life with their social life and how to revise properly. Content related to after school clubs, fashion, gossip, jobs, and driving will also feature, along with quizzes, interviews, games and competitions. The education and well being of its readers is incredibly important to ‘SBTB’ and this will means that, within the pages of the magazine, all questions a 6th form student could have will be answered with thorough detail and care.
